A Novel and Efficient Method for the Synthesis of Methyl (R)-10-Hydroxystearate and FAMEs from Sewage Scum

In this work, the transesterification of methyl estolides (ME) extracted from lipid component present in sewage scum was investigated. Methyl 10-(R)-hydroxystearate (Me-10-HSA) and Fatty Acid Esters (FAMEs) were obtained a single step. A three-level four factorial Box–Behnken experimental design used to study effects methanol amounts, catalyst, temperature, reaction time on using aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3·6H2O) or hydrochloric acid (HCl) as catalysts. AlCl3·6H2O found quite active well conventional homogeneous catalysts HCl. both cases, complete conversion ME into Me-10-HSA FAMEs observed. The products isolated, quantified, fully characterized. At end process, (32.3%wt) purified through chromatographic separation analyzed by NMR. high enantiomeric excess (ee > 92%) R-enantiomer isomer opens new scenario for valorization scum.
